Lavender Festival Karlovo

The festival of lavender is held out for the fourth consecutive year and aims to promote the leading position of Bulgaria as a world leader in the production of lavender oil. The area around Karlovo is the benefactor for the cultivation of this crop. From 2012 onwards, Bulgaria ranks first in the production of lavender oil in the world with nearly 120 tons per year. The largest importer of Bulgarian lavender oil are the US, Japan, Germany, France and the Middle East.
Day 1 - Sofia - Koprivshtitsa - Starosel - Karlovo
Morning drive the scenic road which runs parallel the majestic Balkan Mountains. First stop is the town of Koprivshtitsa – an architectural reserve with authentically preserved atmosphere featuring multi- coloured wooden houses with artistic decoration, stone bridges and winding cobbled streets. Visit the town’s museums and the local church. In the afternoon, continue direction Starosel and visit the largest underground temple in the Balkans found in the area under Chetinyova Mound. Possibility to visit Starosel complex - an excellent example for a modern entrepreneurship combining vine-growing, wine-production and hospitality industry. Enjoy a wine tour and wine tasting in the degustation hall made as a replica of the nearby Thracian Tomb.
Day 2 - Karlovo - Lavender Festival - Sofia
After breakfast, take part in the festival of herbs and lavender. The program starts with an old ritual performed in honor of the healing herbs. You will then see the process of lavender boiling and will learn some practical applications of the different essential oils. Demonstration of some rose-made and lavender-made products. The festival continues with rich folklore program with many dances and songs. After lunch, visit some of Karlovo museums and drive back to Sofia.
