Visit the largest mummers festival in Bulgaria - “Surva”. The mummer’s games have pagan origin and nowadays can be seen in different regions of Bulgaria, but the masquerade carnival in Pernik is the largest of them all. Young boys and adults dress up in fur clothes, put creepy masks and decorate their costumes with heavy bells. You can see them strolling on the streets dancing and singing. The purpose is driving away the evil spirits and wishing health and prosperity throughout the year.
Optional visit of The Mining Museum - a unique of its type in the Balkans. Similar museums are to be found only in Belgium, Germany, Poland and Russia. It i shoused not in a traditional building but in a real time underground mine.
In the afternoon, visit the nearby Zemen Monastery. dating back to the XI century it is one of the oldest preserved monastries in Bulgaria. It is currently uninhabited and declared a monument of culture. The church is richly decorated with frescoes - the oldest layer is from the 11th century and the better preserved from the 14th. Some of the murals are unique examples of medieval Christian art and are artistically most valuable in the Balkans after the frescoes of the Boyana church.
